I think that many times teachers forget that students sometimes may need to "sit" on brand new content and let it soak in before they may be able to move on, build onto that skill, or ask questions about what has confused them. Many times we will just assume every student is alright on a new concept because they are not asking questions or telling you they are confused. Many times right after a lesson or activity, a student may not realize they are confused or misled because they haven't even finished digesting the new content. I think it is important for teachers to leave a concept sometimes for a little while and come back to it later in order to truly see where the student's understanding lies.
I also think many times we can forget that a student cannot build on a concept they don't fully understand. Particularly in math, every lesson builds on one another. When a student has not been given the opportunity to go through the understanding and conceptualizing process of math, they will definitely feel lost and confused when a lesson comes that builds on the previous skill they are still struggling with. Knowing that our students need this time is a very important part of guaranteeing that our students will be successful in their education.
